Distilled Water for Battery?
This might be a stupid question; we were given a lawn mower with a dead battery. I charged it; no joy. My son bought and installed a new battery and all is well.

So, I look at the date of the old one and notice that it is lighter than the new one. It was never filled! No water in it at all.

2 questions:

Can I fill it with distilled water?

Did charging a 'dry' battery damage it?

Not boat related, but a battery is a battery.

Re: Distilled Water for Battery?
If the old battery ever DID work, and was a lead-acid battery, then it had been filled originally. When new batteries are shipped "dry", they need to be filled with sulfuric acid before being charged the first time. After that, distilled water must be added when the levels get low. Some lead-acid batteries are "sealed" instead, but they are usually smaller ones (perhaps your lawnmower battery) without the capability for deep discharge/charge cycles.

Re: Distilled Water for Battery?
Are some batteries shipped dry from the factory to be filled w/ acid at the store?

Like maybe they last forever w/o acid, but have a shelf life once it goes in.

Re: Distilled Water for Battery?
If the battery had been operable and now has no fluid in it, there is something catastrophically wrong with it. Probably a crack. Dispose of it.

If it was never used, then presumably whomever gave you the mower installed it. Its been a long time since I've purchased a battery where you had to add your own acid/water mix. Old motorcycle batteries used to come that way. If this was the case, it may be salvageable, but why bother for what must be a $30 lawn and garden batt. Every time I used to do this, I would ruin something on the workbench or my clothing, when messing with the acid. They sell maintenance free lawn and garden batts. Way to go.
