Hello

I have 2 AGM batteries on my boat one can no loner be charged and is taking down the other. These batteries sell for $300+ each
I was wondering if i could use nom AGM batteries on my boat and if so what do you reccomend some other boat owners near me are reccomending going to walmart and getting 2 everstarts
I have a picture of the specs on the battery as well but cant upload them
One more wuestion could the battety be the cause for my boat eating zinc

Thank you

Re: replacement batteries

You can almost certainly go with something other than AGMs. Flooded lead acid deep cycle batteries are probably the best deal out there. You will need to make sure your battery charger is set to charge "regular" batts vs. the AGMs though. You'll find some good threads here on some good deals on deep cycle flooded batts, such as the ones from Sam's Club. I buy mine at Costco.

Unlikely that the bad batt is causing the eaten shaft zinc.

Re: replacement batteries

Cabela's has AGMs on sale right now for compelling prices. I picked up two group 24s there last week for under $150 each.

AGMs are better for my boat than SLAs because my tight battery storage location doesn't have room for a proper battery box.

Are you on shore power? A ground loop due to bonding issues on your boat or a neighboring boat is likely what is eating your zinc. A ground isolator is the correct way to fix that issue. Here is a good article on that subject:

ABYC (and surveyors for that matter) do not differentiate between battery types. Every battery is supposed to be in a proper box.
