B&G wind cups don't spin

I've tried lubricating them but my fear is these 20 year old bearings are shot. This is the old B&G Network anemometer set. It sometime spins but can't rely in it regardless of how hard the wind blows.

Has anyone replaced the bearings on one of these? Can I replace the entire mast-top unit and still use the mast cable that is in place?

Thank you for your help and advice.

Ed

One boat back I had B&G and the mast head unit failed as you described. If I remember right it also seemed to drop down a bit (that is the cups were lower on the unit than they should be, like something slipped, perhaps the bearing). The electronics guys at MacDougall's in Falmouth knew were to send it to get it fixed...see you are local you could try them (no affiliation beyond long time as a customer).

I hate going up, hope you have a light weight friend who likes heights:)

For whatever it is worth, I had the B&G Network system and after a few years it wouldn't move without a lot of wind. So, I climbed up there and I took the unit down, cleaned it, lubricated it, and it worked beautiful again!

thanks, Doug. I found that B&G will (and did) send me a new bearing. Now to climb up and get the unit off the mast to replace it. Looks like an easy job.

Best regards,

Best regards,

FYI: I brought a seperate line to the mast head with me to let the anenometer (sp?) down to the deck very nicely.

It has a very delicate carbon rod which could easily break.

Years earlier I snapped one.... :-( $450 or thereabouts.

Is it so fragile that lowering it to the deck without a "catcher" risky?

No, nowhere near that delicate. I just didn't want to smash it between me and the mast, or any of the standing rigging on my way down.

If I had put it in my carrying bag of tools, it would have been squished at some point.

So, I tied it to a line, and lowered to the deck and left it there until I got there too.

all went well, thank you Doug. Had thought about doing it while up the mast but taking it down (lowering it on a line) made all the more sense.

Best regards,

Ed,
Good to hear! So now you have an accurate reading of the wind? That sure is a good thing for a sailor!
Fair winds,
Doug
