Raymarine ST 60 Questions
 
Hello,

I am going to have a bunch of questions on my new to be boat. This one involves electronics - specifically the ST 60 tridata and wind instrument. As I previously posted, the ST 60 wind half works - the wind speed is OK but the wind direction just spins.

I received the wiring test and performed it - all voltages were normal. This test was performed at the junction box where the wires exited the mast. I want to repeat the test at the instrument itself but I can't seem to remove the instrument. It's mounted on a bulkhead next to the companionway. I can see the two thumb screws from inside, but when I remove them the instrument does not budge. Do I need to pull harder or am I missing something?

Next question: I don't believe my instruments are networked. If I try to display apparent wind I get ---. Is networking the ST 60 Speed and Wind as simply as plugging in a Seatalk cable?

Last question: the boat has a Garmin 740S plotter - which is fairly new and supports NMEA2000. Can I buy a Seatalk to NMEA2000 cable and connect all four instruments (wind, speed through water, depth, and plotter)?

I'd think that interconnecting all your RM equipment with seataik cables would work.. however I think that to use NMEA 2000 you need a 'backbone' network.. I don't think it's as simple as NMEA0183 (?)'s simple two wire parallel connections.

The raymarine may have an NMEA connection, but probably not 2000, and maybe only input...

The weakest link in the wind data system is usually the transponder at the top of the mast. I'm going on my third, at least this one is still in warranty. The next suspect would be wiring and/or connection, particularly if the mast is removed each season. These are low voltage, so even the slightest corrosion will mess them up.

Check out the ITC-5 from Raymarine. It allows you to connect the existing wind, depth, speed, compass? transducers directly to the ITC-5 and outputs SeatalkNG. I've seen it used a couple of times but don't actually know which transducers it is compatible with.

Seatalk comes in different flavors. Seatalk and Seatalk2 were proprietary, Seatalk NG is NMEA 2000 with different plugs in the tradition of Raymarine to make it hard to use anyone else's equipment. Seatalk NG to NMEA 2000 bridge is a $30 cable.
ST60+ instruments have NMEA 0183 ports. Your chartplotter is NMEA 0183 compatible. So the simple answer is yes, you can hook them all up together. And no, you do not need any other boxes or converters

Yes, "pulling harder" would be the approach (carefully). There are only two screws at the top-right and lower-left (looking at the front) of the instrument holding it in. Anything else holding it in is probably sealant (pray it isn't 5200). Before I bought my boat, someone stole several of the PO's instruments by simply prying them off the panel without even removing the screws. Some of the studs remained behind along with the threaded bushing that was formerly part of the instrument.

Yes again, if the Speed and Wind instruments are on Seatalk they will share data and calculate true wind, VMG (to windward), etc.

Mind you, you should be seeing Apparent wind already - that's the only thing the Wind instrument measures. It uses STW (boatspeed through water) from Seatalk to calculate True wind speed and angle from Apparent. Not that the "True" and "App" flags on the display are all that evident.

If Apparent is ---, you don't have any windspeed info. If it shows you True wind but not Apparent, you may have the instruments networked via Seatalk after all, in which case the Wind instrument may be seeing boatspeed, and, thinking that Apparent Wind = 0, concluding that you are motoring dead downwind at exactly the windspeed, hence True Wind = Speed and Wind Angle = 180.

Hey,

I have spent a little more time on this. I worked with a Raymarine tech on their technical forum and i received excellent information. Based on that I was able to verify that the masthead unit is working correctly. It appears that the display unit is not. I will remove and send to Raymarine for service.

Raymarine also stated that the Seataclk cable D284 is all I need to connect the speed and wind instrument so I can get both apparent wind speed and direction and true wind speed and direction.

Next steps are to get the display repaired, the two instruments connected and then connect both to my Garmin 740S plotter. After that I want to buy the Garmin Sounder so the 740S can work like a sounder / fishfinder.

Hello Again,

I received a call from a Raymarine tech. My unit can be repaired for $225. I authorized the repair and the display unit should be shipped to me soon. I will try to test it over the winter. The boat is on the hard with the mast down. I will see if I can connect the display directly to the wires at the bottom of the mast.

I notice you have a wire junction at the mast. I'm under the impression Raymarine discourages splicing the cable at any point. Does anyone know why this is? Is it necessary? I'm getting ready to pull the stick and would love to make a junction rather than pulling the entire cable out of the boat.
BTW, I have the ST 60 wind instrument and the wind speed stopped registering. Sent Raymarine the transducer (head) and they said it was fine. Sent them the instrument and they "repaired" it for $225. Still had the same problem. Raymarine claimed it must be the cable. I checked and it had continuity on all wires. They wanted me to re-send them the instrument, cable and transducer. I gave up and they refunded the $225. Still don't have a working wind instrument but can live without it.
Then the ST60 depth instrument died, and they were able to fix that for $225. Good thing...that, I can't live without! Anyway...good luck!

My ST 60 wind Instrument package came with a junction box to be used inside the cabin at the base of the base. So when you need to pull the stick just disconnect the wires. While they may discourage splicing the cable, they do include a way to do it.
