Raymarine C80 GPS problem
 
We're trying to network a RayStar 125 GPS receiver to a C80 MFD via seatalk. The RS125 indicates it has a fix (green LED flashing at 4s intervals), but the C80 can't see it. Also, the C80 is no longer receiving depth and speed from a networked tri-data, which worked fine prior to installing the GPS.

The C80 GPS status screen shows nothing, as if there were no GPS connected. The external interface/seatalk diagnostic screen shows a large number of "erroneous sentences".

Thoughts? I'm thinking a bad GPS or a wiring problem--but I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences before I go ripping things apart.

Sounds like you have either a foulty wiring (possibly data wire in short with either ground or 12V, bent/snag cables), or a faulty SeaTalk interface (less likely). Chuck power cables on instruments are at same leve MFD, for a sure common ground. If inst. are powered like your 125, then its very probab;e your data wire is in short or disconnected. Try removing MFD, 125, etc and see if things works (you can check inst. communication using the common "light level" feature on STs). Hopefuly it will be seamless to you ....

I had the same issue...I checked where all the seatalk cables entered the "hub" and realized the connection were loose. Also try plugging each of the devices directly into the C80 and see if they're communicationg.

Also perhaps try a factory reset on the C80 by holding the power and the button next to it till the device resets. You will lose your saved tracks, routes, and settings....

Just save your personal info to a compact flashcard before resetting...

I solved my [problems by installing a 1 farad capacitor from an auto audio store to filter the power to my instruments and autopilot. Solved all quirky problems...

GPS wireing
 
It sould like you have other SEATALK devices on your boat. Were they on the boat before you instaled the C80? If they were they are receiving power on the Seatalk buse. THe Seatalk buse has three wires Red (12v) Yellow (Data) and Black/Shield (ground). When you install the Raystar 125 you need to make sure that you follow the instruction when you have other seatalk devices. Based on your discription the green light flashing means the device is receiving a fix. The data (yellow wire) is not getting onto the buse so that the C80 can receive it plus the TRIDATA is no longer working which also implies that the buse has a proble.
