Furuno 1721 Opinions

I found what I think is a good deal on a Furuno 1721 complete system (display, cable, radome and bracket). It's in god shape and everything seems to work based on the bench test. They want $350 for it. I only want a radar system in order to minimize night watch rounds when coastal cruising and will probably use it fairly seldom so I'm reluctant to go out and spend well over a grand for a new system. Does this sound like a good deal? Anyone have opinions/experience with the 1721?

The price is certainly right! Sounds like a good deal.

The 1721 has a CRT green-screen display. I have the big brother...the 1832...and love it. I intentionally chose it over the LCD and color radars then available due to it's superior discrimination. With it's 24" dome, I can pick out crab pots, lobster pots, buoys, kayaks....just about anything.

The 1721 won't give you this performance because of the smaller radome and consequent wider horizontal discrimination capability, but it will likely equal or better LCD radars with the same size radome. Except, of course, for the new class of close-in radars.

Furuno build quality is excellent, and their support is also very good.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and made the purchase. Heard nothing but good things about Furuno and I definitely prefer CRT to LCD. Much less problematic.

I'm looking at a boat with the 1721 MK 1 radar but they no longer have the manuals. I've done the Google search and come up with the 1721 Mk2 but nothing on mine. Any suggestions? Any differences I should know about?

It appears that the 1721 is a 1997-98 vintage.

Thanks

You might give 'em a call. Unlike some companies, Furuno has their US headquarters in the US, in SW Washington state.
They have been very helpful to me when installed my radar.
