Autohelm ST50 Steering Compass

HI - my steering compass is reading 45 deg v mag compass (which is right) is reading 245 deg. When I try to re align the steering compass (closely following the instruction in the instal' and op' manual) I get PO6 on the display screen when I am expecting to see (according to the manual) segments in the top corners. Much appreciated any advice please.
