Define "to work"? Are you talking about getting the GPS on the Garmin NuviFone to work? Are you talking about using the phone to make phone calls? Are you talking about using apps on the phone, since I believe it is an Android-based smart-phone...though running a very outdated version of the Android OS at v. 1.6.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

i think the newer Garmin phones are android based, but the discontinued AT&T phones have a different operating system.

To work, I mean to just use the GPS feature. I have a contract with AT&T that should allow me to voice call and text but I dont have a data plan. The voice calling and texting should roll into whatever phone I put my sim card in. The apps and other features are nice but the extra $30 a month doesnt interest me. Especially now that they discontinued the unlimited data plans.

You're right, the G60 is using some version of Garmin's own software to operate, not Android. The Android powered model is the A50, which was released by T-Mobile, not AT&T.

I'd call Garmin and ask them if the phone REQUIRES the data service for the GPS and navigation features to work.

I called Garmin and they said that since all of the maps are stored internally to the phone I shouldn't need a data plan. Even though the phone has been discontinued they will still update the maps via a computer and usb connection. They also said that if I unlocked the phone and took out my sim card that it should work as a stand alone GPS receiver. That would be a plus if I ever switch carriers. The guy I talked to didn't give any suggestions on how to unlock the phone. Anyone ever attempted this before?

Unlocking the phone isn't much of an issue. Call your carrier and tell them you need to unlock the phone because you're traveling abroad and need to be able to use a foreign prepaid SIM card. They'll issue you an unlock code for the phone.
