Garmin 72 Problem

I have two Garmin 72 GPS units which came with the boat.

Both have exibited the same problem. They appear to switch themselves off leaving a vertical line on the screen. This happens after a few minutes sometimes or a few hours.

Pulling the plug out and pressing the on button usually gets it going again.

A bit of research on Google comes up with a referance to a WAAS problem and suggests going to Garmin for an update which can be downloaded and installed over the internet.

Has anybody had a similar problem and fixed it with this update. I am reluctant to mess with them as they do work [ sort of ] at the moment but if the fix is there on the Garmin site and works reliably I will give it a go.

I'd give Garmin a call to see if the software corrected the problem, I vaugely remember when this problem popped up it was due to a change in the WAAS system that affected the software on this line of units. This is a pretty old unit and I'm not sure if Garmin is suppotting it with unit updates

The Garmin Update is available at https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/do...ID=167&pID=214 . If your system is not current as of V2.50 use the web-updater. It's a no brainer.

We had the same symptoms a time or two on our MAP76... the update did the deed.

IIRC, it is because the old firmware can't deal with some new satellites that were brought on-line recently. Do the update.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
