B&G VHF, Network

I have an old (93?) B&G VHF which I would love to replace with a unit with DSC. However, the unit is in two pieces, each about 4x4, one for the speaker and one for the controls. Does anyone make a similar unit (yes, I've googled) to that would fit into that footprint?

If I can't find such a unit (and I'm skeptical that I can) guess my choice is to install in new unit in the side of the wet locker (where the speaker is) and simply cover the resulting 4x4 hole in the electrical panel with suitable material. I really don't want to go through what I think would be a big deal by replacing the entire electric panel backing.

Any other ideas? What is that black, plastic like material and where can i get a small piece.

Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

IIRC, Raymarine makes one of those split VHF units. Check their website or West Marine.
