I need a tach
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I need a tach. I have a 5411 Universal diesel engine with I think a 55 amp alternator. I think it has a connection on the alternator for a tach. Last time I looked at tach gauges it referenced the number of poles. I have no idea the number of poles on my alternator ie no documentation on the alternator or engine for that matter.
I also do not want to pay 400 for the gauge either. Any know of a cheap one ? (max I need is 3000 RPM)
I thought about maybe using a handheld tach that you push against the rotating shaft end ie use the hand held tach to get the engine to the desired rpm. I think I saw one of these for $90. It would be inconvenient to use but maybe more accurate then a tach off the alternator that is set incorrectly.
Ideas? comments?
