Shoot thru hull transducer

Crew. I propose to install a depth sounder (probably Raymarine ST) and install the transducer as "shoot thru hull". The original sounder was set up in a piece of 4" pvc pipe cut to suit the hull, with the transducer mounted in the screw cap on top, and the cavity filled with grease. Never saw it working, and I've heard of filling the container with mineral oil, but grease? Any experience out there in Sailnetland? Cheers. Bill

I have heard of mineral oil but not grease.

You could just clean and sand the hull and epoxy the transducer in place.

I have/had several ducers that are/were mounted inside the hull. I've mounted them in silicone (you have to be careful not to get bubbles in it when dispensing it) and also in wells like you have with mineral oil or RV antifreeze. I've never heard of grease being used or recommended. Mine have all worked well if you mount them in a good location with solid fiberglass under them.

The norm now is to use RV (Pink) Antifreeze not mineral oil - It was found that mineral oil attacked the bonding/sealing agent used for mounting the tanks for shoot-thru transducers.

The best way to attach the tube would be epoxy, same as most manufacturers recommend for attaching the transducer directly to the hull. It will withstand anything likely to be put inside the tube.
Transducers are epoxy covered when made, unless they are made of bronze.
