First, by "free" charts, I'm assuming you mean US Gov't provided ENC or Raster charts...not the free CM93 avaialable as an illegal download online
Second, if indeed you are referring to the Raster or ENC charts from USA, then you have to own a chartplotter or gps specifically designed to show those charts. As far as I know, very very few devices support this capability right now as it breaks the device maker's stranglehold on chart upgrade revenue. Post your plotter maker and model # and then we'll be able to provide more info....but sadly, the answer is likely no, you cant do this yet.
Eventually, these plotter makers will bend and let the gov't charts be supported...especially if applications like OpenCPN and SeaClear keep pushing the envelope when it comes to Freee/OpenSource applications and tablets like the iPad keep getting cheaper and more versatile. Only a matter of time...
