About this WIFI subject.

Admittedly I am a bit of a geek so going cruising without my internet is not acceptable. What I would like to do is get a set up now and use it at home while I am saving money to leave. So it's for Home/marine. and I was going to spend $200 but 250 will be ok too. So in short I have been looking at The Wirie: Purchase The Wirie ..

While ones like the bullet and the the Ubiquiti NanoStation2 seem to be a bit cheaper I know that you get what you pay for. As far as I can tell the wirie is about the best match for what I am looking for..

My Q is,,, any of you run this? Any of you have pro's and con's on this device?

and maybe, any of you know of better for a little or so cheaper?

Thanks guys, I just figure I pay $50 a month for internet right now.. If I buy this it will pay it's self off in 5 months while using it at home.

Because I have a disdain for cruisersforum, I'll help you out here.

Why not think about an Andoid phone with wireless tethering? I use that setup on our boat, and it works great. I can feed wireless to the Wii and all the laptops. As long as you at least have 3G and preferably 4G coverage, you are set. We can stream Netflix on the Wii and browse on our laptops without any problems.

I have "rooted" my Android phone and the apps needed are free, so all that we are out of pocket are the cost of 4G coverage and data.

I recently purchased a Wirie and have a few days of use (not much of a data point). It was easy to setup, worked out of the box, and seems to work very well. I am a tech guy by day and putting something like this together yourself is certainly an option. In my case, I was not interested in messing around ordering parts, getting the wrong parts, buying antennae with the wrong adapter, wasting money on shipping, etc... Given how I value my time, the Wirie was a good deal. It works. I recommend it.

Thanks guys, i think i'm going to get this.. i've looked into it a lot and I think it's the best option for me.

As for hotspotting.. When I leave for the east coast I am cancelling my cell phone and just picking up a burner.. I do not want to have any bills. I am debt free and when I roll out I want to stay that way.

If I remember correctly the Wirie is an Alfa USB wifi unit in a watertight(ish) box. I've used an Alfa for a long time and it is okay. I still pack it in my go-kit on deliveries to use at each end.

On my own boat I have a Ubiquiti Bullet2HP with Air802 12 dBi antenna. Truly outstanding. If you don't want to track the bits down yourself, you can get a kit ready to go from lots of places like wififorboats.com
