Chile Budget laptop or notebook

After looking at the huge selection at Fry's, I'm wondering if there are any sailors with a chile budget like mine that can make a suggestion for a laptop, notebook, etc to use as a backup GPS, AIS display and maybe hookup to an SSB receiver. I can't afford a ruggedized, so what's next best?

If it's just a backup, for minimal usage in case of an emergency, then I would get the cheapest netbook I could find. Check the prices at TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components, Netbooks & Electronics and I think you'll find they are a bit less than Fry's.

old military/police surplus rugged units can be found quite reasonable ... if you can work with Ubuntu most will keep up just add ssd and memory search fleabay for toughbook

In June 2010 I bought a Compaq laptop for $300. I was looking at netbooks, but figured for the price I'd get a hard drive and a DVD drive with a 15.6" screen. It's a great deal and you can find better ones for the same price with Pentium processors, mine's just a celeron. Still works all the nav software just fine. Netbooks, to me, are a waste. Too limited for multipurpose use.

GPS and Navigation Software Options

You could also read the other laptop navigation posts on this board, there's lots to learn about the very same question.
