Open Array on a Sailboat

I have been looking into radars for my 30' sailboat ('81 Lippincott). I have found a lot of setups with open arrays and was wondering if anyone had mounted one on their sailboat or knows of anyone that has. If so did it work well, and how high did it need to be mounted? My idea was to mount it on a stern pole like I have seen radomes mounted, I work in a machine shop so fabricating a pole is no problem, but I wanted to see it it has been done and if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks

I'm sure its done for large...very large boats that are more motor sailors...but an open array uses significantly more amperage than most of the boats people have on this forum can afford to give. Not to mention the thoughts of it getting caught on a sail, a sheet or halyard. Would strongly recommend looking at the domes instead.

Good call, I did not think about the draw on power a large battery bank isn't exactly in the budget.

If heading offshore AIS may be a better bet and it does use a lot less power.
