icom vhf continuously broadcasting on 9 and 16?

I have a backup vhs that indicates it is broadcasting whenever it is set to ch 16 or ch 9? It won't let me monitor either channel without broadcasting. I checked with another radio monitoring 16 and they confirmed my broadcasts. Any ideas?

Replace the radio if you can't unstick the transmit button.

For something as cheap as a VHF, diagnosis time well exceeds cost to replace. You can get a good vhf for around $100.

Could be the button in the mic, but all radios these days use logic switching, so likely that it is an internal part that has gone bad.

I agree with replacing it. You would spend more in money/time to repair it if you could find someone that could work on it.

It only displays the scrolling word, "calling" when switched to channels 9 and 16. If it stops on 16 when scanning because of a security call it receives the call normally.

So it will scan through 9 & 16 without transmitting, but if you stop it and switch to those channels it starts broadcasting?

Does it display 'calling' on other channels when you key up?

My radio (not an Icom) displays 'hailing' for 9 & 16 because they are hailing channels. (Also 'distress' on 16)

What model is your radio?

My icom is an ic- 403. Perhaps it is fine? To "monitor" 16 or 9 I just have to keep it on scan?

I looked for the 403 but only found a 304 on their site. Regardless the picture seems to confirm what I was thinking about the 'calling' display. See the manual link from that web page. It probably operates similar to your radio. Of course you need to double check if it is actually transmitting if you are just idle on 9 or 16, somehow it seems unlikely. Perhaps check the manuals for a radio that is more similar to yours and see if it gives you a lead.
