Issues with a Garmin 2010c

We just purchased a C&C 32 with a Garmin 2010c Chartplotter.
The unit seems to work ok but I it does not display any detail.
It will show land mass, water, speed, direction, tides, etc. but not any navigation markers, spot soundings, shipping lanes, restricted areas and so on. I reset the factory default but that did not help.
I suspect it is the memory card but I have no way of determining this.
It has the blue chart card but I do not have the blue chart card usb reader. It is a discontinued unit and the previous owner never had one either.
I would hate to have to replace the whole thing if it is only a software issue.
Any thoughts on this?

The 2010c has various display options including a selection of detail from none to too much. It also has a hide/show data function. Check to ensure that you have selected "show data" and that the detail level is set at a reasonable level.

The 2006c/2010c/2012c units are very robust and you shouldn't have much difficulty. If you can find one of the old style data card readers on eBay or the like you can update to chip with a BlueChart disc current through 2008 although you will have to pay Garmin for the unlock codes for the areas you would like to have. You can still find Garmin pre-programed chips, which do not need an unlock code, but they are fairly dated by now and must be used with caution. Unfortunately, Garmin discontinues support for their devices relatively quickly to force repurchases which I will no longer do.

The garmin data card programmer is still sold by Garmin:

Check also that the Blue Chart card is actually selected. It could just be reading a base map installed in the unit.

Unfortunately, that seems to have become true. At least the earlier units were very good, however. I am looking forward to the day--if ever--when someone comes up with a way to convert other chart formats to/from Garmin formats.

Really, cause I have always thought that Garmin, although not the best stuff, really wasn't all that bad.
I do admit that they seem to make things obsolete a little before they should, but all in all not bad stuff for the average guy.

Garmin's "stuff" is excellent. The problem is the "Engineered Obsolescence". We have a 2006c at our Nav table and a 3205c at our Helm station and they are both excellent and both declared "obsolete" by Garmin so we're screwed if we need a repair or replacement charts later than 2008!!!

FWIW...

Even though the model may be "discontinued" you still can get it repaired or buy charts for it. I have a 3006c and still can get charts for it. Go to their website, plug in your model and you should be able to link to available maps.

After talking to many distributors for Garmin I have discovered that even though it is the blue chart card that is scewed up and not the unit itself , it cannot be fixed because it is obsolete.
Garmin "stuff" is Garmin crap. Instead of calling it Garmin how about calling it Garbage.
So, I am in the market for a new non-Garmin unit. I would like my new unit to have a radar and sounder.
Any thoughts or preferences on chartplotters and why?
I'm all ears.

Instead of talking to distributors why not call Garmin direct? They still have have charts available for this unit though the end of the year:

I have owned many of the products over a 15-20 year period and found both their products and support to be great. I don't believe that you really need to constantly update electronic charts if you are using them in conjunction with paper charts like you should.

Currently using a Garmin GPSMap 3006c integrated withheir radar. Purchased in 2005, its since been discontinued but software and charts are still available. There is nothing better for confirming your position than having a radar overlay on a chart.
