erratic behaviour of depth log!

Hi! My nasa cruiser depth log has been giving me rather erratic readings for a while! The unit is installed in-hull so very little to do other than check the wirings!

Are you supposed to detect the sonar/sound waves from beneath the hull!?

Also since she has been on the dry, the performance has deteriorated drastically - is this normal because of the interference around!?!

Anything else I can check while she is on land?

Here is a link to unit readings taken yesterday

Jay,
If I understand you correctly the boat is on the hard. Sounders do not work well out of the water, you need the water to properly transmit sound waves.
You will not normally hear the pinging only a clicking sound if you are close enough to the sender unit( in the boat).
If the boat is in the water check unit at known depth( such as in marina at the dock) measure with stick and verify readings. Also remember thermoclines will sometimes cause erratic readings.

thanks Mi.

I dont think that thermoclines is the issue.

The depth finder actually also plays up also whilst she is in the water - if the transducer is install in-hull like mine seems to be (pls see here: IMG00146-20111218-1101 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I dont think there is very much I could so other than check the wires!

Also do you know if the white nut serves any purpose?

tks

J.
