Agree with all the above on the benefits of radar. It's high on the list of essential gear. Also is nice to set in alarm mode to scan while you're not watching. Although I did for many years, now cannot imagine being in thick fog without one.

Where and how you sail is the biggest determinant of whethere it is pretty essential or just nice to have. In Maine even for day sails or short coast cruises it would be more important than a chart plotter. In areas with little chance of fog, much less so..
When overlayed on a chart plotter short of running into a buoy, it is probably the best navigation tool available.
