VHF Channel 30

I was sailing past the Cove Point LNG Terminal on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday and got fairly close to the security zone, when the VHF tuned to Channel 30 and it sounded like a phone ringing. I was not able to communicate on 30 but instead it kept ringing. After switching back to 16, I tried to go to 30, but it does not exist.
Any ideas?

Re: VHF Channel 30

Do you have an AIS transmitter? Sounds to me like a DSC call to your radio. but they'd have to know your MMSI. could it have been a friend trying to get a position request or something? I suppose someone might also have hit a DSC distress too.

Re: VHF Channel 30

bj, you might try to contact the radio's manufacturer and find out how the radio decides there is a channel 30, when there isn't supposed to be one.
