Berkeley National Labs Photovoltaic Announcement
I was very interested this weekend to read this announcement from Laurence Berkeley National Labs
about a new manufacturing technology that could enable the fabrication of low cost, high efficiency solar cells from just about any semiconductor.
No one has yet tackled any of the issues that arise when trying to commercialize a lab process -- consistency, yield, equipment, hazardous materials, skills, training, scaling up -- there are a hundred ways this could turn into a dead end. Still, if they succeed at moving this technology out of the lab and into the commercial sector, the cost of solar power will drop like a stone! I keep tabs on a lot of different research, most of which never goes anywhere. I could be wrong, but I think this is one to watch.
Moderators, if this is the wrong forum, please move it to the right one. I was torn on where to put this posting since it doesn't quite fit any of our boards.
