Red face Lowrance AIS Confusion....

I'm considering purchasing a Lowrance MFD and I was looking for a compatible AIS. The Lowrance site has a product page that talks about AIS as if there is an existing product but none of the products listed on the page have AIS capability as far as I can tell. They have DSC but that is not the same thing - is it?

Am I missing something here?

CORRECTION - AIS NOW VISIBLE ON PAGE - VERY STRANGE - MAYBE THEY MONITOR THIS SITE.....

Thanks a lot

Re: Lowrance AIS Confusion....

I'm confused as Lowrance don't make an MFD, as far as I know. I take it you mean a chartplotter. I have a HDS-5M chartplotter and use it to display AIS data that come from the Standard Horizon VHF. So I can testify that it works, but the implementation is not as good as Garmin's.

Based on my experience I'd go with another manufacturer, based on :

Ease of use, implementation of NMEA 2000 devices (poor), customer support (not great), implementation of DSC and AIS on the chartplotters (non-existent and poor, respectively)

Lowrance's speciality is the fishfinder market and that's where they excel, but for sailboat use I'd stay away.

The only thing stopping me selling it and getting a Garmin is the 2 months I spent getting the thing to display AIS targets with no help from the manual and customer support.

Re: Lowrance AIS Confusion....

AIS can work over NMEA...so the only benefit of going with the manufactures own module is just for looks when it boils down to it.

Re: Lowrance AIS Confusion....

The Lowrance plotters expect the AIS data via NMEA 0183.

Um.... Wha?

I have an emtrak b200 and a garmin 740s, Lowrance HDs5, hds7 gen2 touch and simrad Nss7 networked with NEMA 2000

ALL of the displays see ais, and all of the navico can control the sonichub music too.

I'd also say I vastly prefer lowrance's n2k implementation over Garmin's.

I work at WM, my boat has a handheld garmin

Re: Lowrance AIS Confusion....

Mark,
I'm going to restart this thread with a different title as it will be really helpful but I do have one misunderstanding. The LR HDS 9M displays charts, radar, instruments etc. Is it not a fully implimemented MFD in that it does not allow control or something????

I have a LOT to learn here.

Graham
