GPSmap 76C to IPAD

How can I interface the garmin to the ipad?
The garmin owners manual lists these interfaces:

USB(garmin data format) and

Serial Data Format with several selections:
Garmin
Garmin DGPS
NMEA In/NMEA Out
Text Out
RICM In
RICM In/NMEA Out
RICM In/Text Out
None

The ipad is wifi only with bluetooth.
Do I have here the ingredients for getting Lat/Longs out of the garmin and into the ipad?

That is just too much alphabet soup for me.
Thanks

Re: GPSmap 76C to IPAD

Garmin 76 puts data onto NMEA/serial. Ipad only has wifi/bluetooth. So, you'll need to get that data onto a TCP stream or a bluetooth method.

I've tried using open source software "thuss" to make my laptop (which has NMEA data coming in from the serial to usb converter) and making it a wireless repeater. But I haven't gotten this to work.

THen its a matter of using your software on the ipad to recognize the TCP stream. I think most mac navigation software does this.

Night owl,
Thanks for your response. While I conceptually understand what you said, I was hoping for guidance like get box abc and cable 123 and use xyz software (app).
Alas, all this just to be able to use what I have and not have to buy another proprietary box.

Re: GPSmap 76C to IPAD

I guess here's what I would do to keep it simple (relatively speaking).

1) Garmin Data Transfer Cable
2) Brookhouse iMux with wifi capability (expensive)
3) iNavX marine software on the ipad.

If you have more data on NMEA, use the iMux to multiplex the data and put it on the wifi data stream. Unlike the rest of the world, Marine electronics is still a bit of the wild wild west. You have to play with things to figure it out.

Personally, I dont like all this expensive gear to buy, and all of my data is already on NMEA between my chartplotter, autopilot, and laptop/nav station. So on my laptop (running OSX), I have tried running an application called Thuss which "redirects" my data to the wifi/nic. Then I would use my iNavX to connect the ipad to the laptop via wifi to stream the data. That is more complex and requires more "tinkering"..but thats what I like to do. If/when I retire, I'll do this project.

Or i may get lazy and just upgrade to Raymarines new plotters which ahve built in wifi and repeat capability to ipad or android devices (via a free app in the marketplace)

ah, and this is USB enabled. That gets easier...sorta. (if you use thuss). No serial to usb conversion req'd.
