Mast rewiring 101

The beautiful Hannah Lee is waiting to be repainted from her ordeal with Sandy, last October. She may have been spared worse damage because of the coincidence of my having the mast removed for maintenance last fall. At any rate her mast was under water and needs to be totally rewired, a task that I was hoping to do myself, in spite of being a total novice electrically.I mean I can do remove and replace, can't I? The first item I went to order was the VHF antenna for the mast. The antenna I was going to order came with a RG-58/u cable. The only thing that I know about this cable is that Don Casey says don't use that cable. (Not a good start.) Why is this cable not good? What antenna and cable can you guys recommend (from Defender?)?
Any advice/cautions/"look-out-fors" can you give me re: wind instrument, mast head light, foredeck light r and r?
Thanks for the help.
Bruce
