Friends of ours with the same boat we have--a Beneteau F-42 with a Perkins 4-108--installed a Balmar. Unfortunately, they went through a couple before they finally got one without problems. Based upon their experience, it would seem that Balmar may be somewhat over rated. By comparison, we have a "Silver Bullet" truck alternator that has been working reliably for 14 years and is far less costly.

FWIW...

what amp rating is this silver bullet alt? im trying to find a high output alt that i can control with 3 stage charging so as to minimize engine run times while cruising.

Our alternator is 120 Amp which is no longer available. Today they are 140, 160 and higher amperages. We manage ours with an AR-5 3-stage External Regulator. As a practical matter, with a single belt, I don't think any alternator really produces its advertised capacity but ours has been very satisfactory anyway ("knock on wood" eh?).

@e37duff - I'd be interested in the model # of the alternator you select. I've got the 4-108 as well.

The Balmar twin post does fit on the 108, but needs a pretty skookum mounting bracket (custom) and the right pulley (call Balmar). We use a 210A twin post 94 series on a 154.
