E32 anchor roller
Never satisfied with not fiddling with he boat, I want to install an anchor roller. What have you guys done on your E32?

I had considered installing one a bit cocked to the side, or maybe installing kind of a small oak sprit. Having done so much work to the boat, I'd like to keep the amount of additional work down somewhat. However, I can't stand dragging chain across the toe rail.

Anybody got pics?

Re: E32 anchor roller
I helped a friend remove the anchor roller on his E32 some years ago. It was a metal one that stuck out from the bow on the stbd side of the fore stay. I suspect that he did not like the way it looked and may also have been concerned that the anchor roller would act as a jousting lance on other boats when manoevering in tight quarters.
He uses a decent sized Danforth type anchor when over nighting in the Chesapeake where there is good holding ground and an all chain rode is not absolutely necessary.

This E 32 also came with a vane steering mechanism which the owner decided not to use. The mounts are still on the boat on the transom and provide an easy means for getting back on the boat from the water.

Re: E32 anchor roller
Thanks Caleb,

I only use 50 ft of chain, but don't like it dragging across my boat. After I posted, I did some more looking, and read some discussion, but would love to see pics if anybody in this forum has any.

Re: E32 anchor roller
Welcome Ritchard.

Perhaps what you are looking for is pictures of how others have implemented an anchor roller with a manual windlass. I'm not sure how the anchor locker on the E32 will accommodate all that chain but I suppose it should, somehow.

I believe that my friends E32 spent time near Toronto and the Bahamas with her previous owner, hence the steering vane. The only part of this boat that I don't think is sea worthy are the cheap Beckson plastic port lights (windows). I'd replace those before adding an anchor roller and windlass.

Re: E32 anchor roller
An anchor roller is going to cost me a hundred or so, and be of benefit the week it goes on. 10 upgraded ports would cost me many, many hundreds, and I don't venture too far to sea from my home port of Toronto.

Windlass comes later. Right now we are relying on brute force.

Re: E32 anchor roller
Ritchard - I have a roller on the bow of my boat and it makes the anchoring process very easy. I don't have pictures handy but I'll get a few this weekend and post them.

I'd be grateful, Bigdog.

Re: E32 anchor roller

That's more or less what I have figured out that I need to do. Interesting on your install that the starboard side dockline chock was removed. I was thinking that I would cut away a bit of the vertical part of the toerail on that side in order to move the chock back a few inches and not lose it.

Thanks a lot for the pics,

Re: E32 anchor roller
FWIW, Andy's pics show how the bow roller was installed on my friends 1980 E32 before he had me remove it.
I can't remember if we re-installed the anchor chock on the stbd side after removal of bow roller.
I'm not sure why you couldn't install the chock a few inches aft of the roller.
