Ericson 27 fuel tank leak

The fuel tank in my 1976 Ericson 27 seems to have developed a tiny gas leak in lowest corner of the tank. It appears that it is coming through the weld. I tried a patch kit that claimed could be used without draining the tank but it is leaking through the patch. I am now trying to drain the tank. I would appreciate any input on possible causes and repairs. Thanks

best emergency fix for gas tanks I've found is to keep a tube of 'seal-all' around, it works on fuel tanks with fuel dripping out, just wipe off any crud, the seal all sticks right through gasoline or diesel, can rely on it.patched my bronco tank on the side of a trail a few years ago after hitting a rock, and it's still holding fuel without leakage. I won't recommend it as a permanant patch, simply because I prefer to weld or otherwise repair a fuel tank, but it's great as a quick fix, and is solid and reliable, I figure that if it can hold up to offroad abuse, under the same conditions that put the hole in the tank originally, I can rely on it.

If it is coing through the weld I'd say it's likely a corrosion issue. If the tank is easily removed, pull it and inspect the interior for corrosion, if the inside is messed up it's normally a better idea to look for a replacement, if it's ok, find someone to go over the weld again where it's leaking. They do have sealer for fuel tanks that are dumped inside and swished around to seal the tank, but tha needs to have the tank pulled so you can move it around and coat the entire interior.

ken.

leaking tank

Hi
I just finished fixing my fuel tank on my 1972 ericson 27.
I was able to remove the tank thru the lazzarette, then I
had a local sheetmetal fabricator copy it in aluminum; call it a water
tank because they don't want the responsibilty of a gas tank.
good luck

Al,

You were actually able to remove that thing through the lazzarette??? Wow!!! I think mine is leaking too, but I had pretty much decided that the boat was built around the tank and there was no getting it out. Any tips? How much clearance?

Thanks!
-Brad

PS- In the meantime, I'm gonna try the epoxy putty stick stuff, which I've had pretty good luck with on other such things.
