Ericson 31, new engine?

I have a 1977 Ericson 31. No. 21 in series. The only one that has a gasoline Atomic 4 engine. It gave up. Asking for recommendations on replacement. Rebuilt Atomic 4 gasoline? Diesel? If Diesel, which one? I see similar boats (for sale) have Universal M3-20, Volvo Penta MD2030. I'm wondering about the Yanmar 3YM20. New to boating. Advice please.

Re-powering with a diesel will easily cost 10 grand. Are you sure you want to invest that kind of money in that boat? Rebuilt A4 would be your cheapest option, at least in the short run.

repair or rebuild the A-4, diesel will be over 10k. 3YM20 will be over 15k just for the engine and trans if you can find a used one new they are around 20k installed

Probably better to rebuild the A4. Moyer Marine has lots of info and parts.

I guess the real question is what is up with the A4, they are very reliable and seem to run almost for ever. You may be able to get it going and running reliably for a lot less.

Rebuild the A4, as above. If repowering, look at a Beta.

That boat might be worth $35K. A new diesel will likely cost ~$8K+ PLUS ~$4k for installation.

The Universal M3-20 is based on the Kubota D-640 block. The Beta Marine (Beta 20) engine would be based on a later Kubota (D-722) block.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a boat with a Volvo engine in the USA. Parts for Volvo engines are stupid expensive!

The Yanmar is a great engine, but I doubt that you could buy the engine for less than $11K.

I would opt for a Beta.

Plus Beta makes some atomic 4 direct bolt in replacements. No need to redo the engine beds. But I think $35 K is pushing it a bit. But if you like the boat then who cares. Likly less than it would cost to sell with bad motor and buy another boat with a good one.

Re: Ericson 31, new engine?

What does "It gave up" really mean? Coil burnt out? Sucked a valve? Threw a rod? (etc)

A rebuild from moyer is around $4K - $5K depending on what you need and it's a drop-in replacement.

The A4 is actually quite a good engine. The one in my boat is 35 years old, with thousands of hours on it, and it just keeps going. They're pretty cheap. They're smooth. Ya gotta deal with the hassle of gas tho.

Diesel repower may need new fuel tanks, new exaust, new control panel,etc.. in addition to the engine/trans.

Fix the A4 or replace it with an A4.

Re: Ericson 31, new engine?

I installed a Yanmar 3YM20 in my Ericson 31 in 2012. Cost of new engine $9027. Beta was a little cheaper, but don't remember the exact quote. Was able to sell my old 2-cylinder diesel for parts.

Agree rebuilding A4 is cheapest option. Next cheapest option might be to find a used engine - they're out there, you just need to put in the leg work to find them.
