Red face Mast replacement Ericson 27'

Ericson 27' with damaged (separated at base) mast, being offered as a project boat at local marina in my area. Love the 27, but don't want to get into a project that has a doubtful possible outcome. I am a senior with some tool skills. I am also new to sailing, or any boating for that matter. HELP! Am I crazy to consider this bargain? Any insight into how to proceed with this type of repair? How can check for residual damage to the hull/deck mounting point?
Replacement parts source(mast)? Thanks for any advice in advance
Tom

Is the rest of the boat in good shape?

Good luck on the project. Also time warped back to the old format again. Weird.

With some searching a similar mast should be available if not a direct replacement.

Re: Mast replacement Ericson 27'

you did say where you are. does it have a mast that needs to be repaired or is it missing. there are used masts out there for not that much but the shipping will most likely cost more then the mast. best way to ship is on your boat if it is on a trailer. another way is to hook up with a boat being shipped and they can through the mast on with the boat.
Check Don's marine salvage in Fl. they are also list masts on eBay.
You are not crazy for buying a boat that needs to be repaired
Just like the rest of us, just crazy for buying a boat.

THe boat is in Los Angeles. Looks solid but for the mast. Will need replacement. Wasn't sure how to determine the damage to where the mast connects to the boat. Thanks for all the comments and tips!

Re: Mast replacement Ericson 27'

I'd look for and source a mast before paying anything. If you find a mast that works., and get yourself into position where you csn even answer that question, you may find that you need to also source new sails and rigging to go with it.

Most likely the cheapest way to actually get a replacement mast is to buy a different Ericson 27 that has a mast...so maybe one without a mast really has no value?

Log in and ask your questions at
EricsonYachts.org: The Starting Point on Ericson Yachts!

There are lots of current and former E-27 owners there.

Re: Mast replacement Ericson 27'

If you can find a replacement used mast then it may be a good buy. But a new mast will likely cost more than the boat is worth in sail-away condition. Even a decent used mast will cost a good bit because you will almost certainly need to buy a complete set of sails based on the new dimensions.

So if you can find a good used mast, for say $5,000, toss another $5,000 on sails, $1,000 for standing rigging, and $1,000 for running rigging. At a minimum the used mast option is $12,000. How much is the boat worth?
