Ericson 35/36/39

I am on the hunt for a good coastal cruiser. I have been scouting the Bristol/Pearson/Morgan/Tartan in the 35 ft range and like what I see. But they are all very similar in terms of design and cabin layout. I happened upon the Ericsons on Yachtworld, and was intrigued. Can you tell me what the build quality of the Ericsons is in comparison to other "classic" designs of the 60s and 70s? I don't expect objectivity in this forum, but any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Freeman

You may want to check the Ericsonyachts.org website, where you will find lots of information about ericsons, mostly very positive. I own one, but would not have bought it if I weren't convinced that they were quite well built and have a good reputation. I have not been disappointed--they seem well built and sail well. My 30+ could use some additional storage space, but that's my only complaint so far.
Frank.

Ericsons generally have a solid reputation - certainly on par with most other mainstream manufacturers. However many of these boats are getting long in the tooth, so each example needs a thorough going-over to be sure it's still in good shape. Neglect and abuse over the years can undo a lot of good.

Two friends have Ericsons - two very different boats, and both are happy with them.

One is an early 80s E33, a Ron Holland design, a good looking boat and a strong performer. This boat is proving to be a bit of a PHRF sleeper, good cockpit and reasonable accomodation. Price was EXTREMELY reasonable, but they have had to put in some TLC since then - to good effect.

The other is an '86 32 - Bruce King design and is very well equipped, esp now as the PO has upgraded extensively. They are a cruising couple that are very pleased with their boat, having upgraded from a Laser 28 - a pretty drastic change-up in many ways. These boats seem to hold their value quite well and are well regarded. Newer models have a less traditional (then) aft head layout.

Find a nice one, you probably won't go far wrong.

You will like the E-35, but do not overlook the E-38 as well. I have been onboard both and they are solid boats with nice finish by a quality builder. Bruce King has an excellent rep as a designer.
