Since I've been in the boat in alot of humid and rainy weather it has started showing black mold on the interior walls. They don't have a removable liners. It's more like textured plastic coating.

How bad is this for me to live with and how quick do I need I take care of it. It's been raining for three days and its gotten worse. It had tiny spots web I bought the boat and now they are bigger. Do I need to take care of this immediately or can I wait a couple days for a dry sunny day and give things a proper cleaning and drying out.

I was reading about home remedies but what looks best o me is either a pre mixed bathroom cleaner or west marines' star brite mildew stain remover. I have to live in this for the summer so I don't want to use anything to toxic and end up getting sick.

I've got lives and little paper masks to wear so I dont breathe in mold.

The one issue when I bought my boat the owner told me about was that the mast sheeves the main halyard and jib halyard run through at the top of the mast are sticking making it hard to pull the halyards.

His thought was since they were probably originally designed for wire to rope halyards and have since been replaced with all rope halyards, the rope is sticking. It could also be that they are frozen. I can raise and lower them but can't tell if its just running over a totally frozen block or if its sticking.

Any experience with this? I could replace one of the halyards with a wire to rope halyard and see if it works.

I live in Vancouver and I've been looking to work as a deckhand for companies that do trips along the coast and the island. So far the majority of companies I've found are just bareboat charters and this doesn't help me out. If you know of any companies that own vessels which are crewed by an actual crew and not just customers please let me know because I'm not having any luck

Hello everybody,

I haven't been on here in months but I am very proud to say that I am living aboard my first little boat!

Nothing flash, but it's home and very cheap to live and that means I'll have a proper Yacht soon enough!

But onto my question, I have two batteries which I need to keep topped up, however the only reason the run the outboard IS to charge the batteries!

My fridge and water heating are all run off a gas bottle, to save money and to protect my batteries from over charging I do not want to run the engine needlessly so I bought a couple of digital voltmeters (1 for each battery).

They are very easy to wire up, but can anybody tell me what levels I should ideally keep my batteries between?

I find it disturbing that it isn't better "advertised" to the boating community, there isn't even any mention of it on their website that I can see easily Home of the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim.
We are headed near the bridge that weekend, hope this does not mess up our plans.

I tried to finish what I thought would be an EASY project, but to no avail.

Deck-mounted starboard nav light was out, so I tried to remove the three screws that held the lense in place. Easy-peezy, right? Nope- the screws have apparently been bedded in with 5200, because they aren't budging.

One screwhead broke off, one will only work loose a little, and one won't budge at all. I tried Dremeling out a slot on the heads so that I could use a big flat head screwdriver, but that didn't work either.
So what to do now? Drill out the screws with a titanium bit?? That is the only thing I think might work.

I just took a look at the new J/97. My wife has gotten into racing and wants a faster boat. I won't replace the Mariner 28 (1979) I have now, I own it and have poured too much of myself into restoring the boat.

I was impressed with the lines and aesthetics of the J/97. Roomy cockpit, and an open layout in the interior. Boat is definitely built for performance but seems comfortable as well.

My concern is construction. It's been a while since I have looked at a new boat so I am unfamiliar with present day construction techniques. For example, glueing the deck to the hull. Anyone have any experience with this? How does it last? There is an older Beneteau in the yard that used this technique. Hull is full of moisture, pegs the meter, most of the toe rail has been ripped off and its in the middle of a repair.

Also, I liked the shape of the keel of the J/97. Yet the top 1/3 is hollow. Makes the boat lighter and increases performance for sure, but how does that hold up after years of stress?

Asking price is $180k. I felt this was a reasonable price for a new modern 32 foot J boat. Just seems to me putting $180k into an older better constructed boat would make more sense.

I may just end up buying a smaller used J boat to race with. Put the money in the rigging and sails.

Anyone have any advise what to look out the first leg voyage?

I have committed this first leg voyage as the captain to sail a Japanese made Mariner 40 with the owner plus other. She is 40 yo boat but fully refitted.

I have studied the pilot charts, other sources decently well plus the weather pattern in last few days. Last trip (three weeks ago) to Colon, Panama was fun and yet boring, but it was the most smooth sailing I have ever had. I think my luck will eventually runs out.

If you have the first personal experience in the trip, please share with me. I am preparing for surprise, but some early warning is always good.

We have arranged for our local crossing agent. Hopefully this will reduce the wait time from 2 weeks to 2-3 days. My wife will act as a go-between to coordinate with the agent. My hope is to cross the canal ASAP.

TIA. :)

Hello all: My last post was way back in 2012. I have been researching, living aboard, boats and where to call my home port. I am leaving the land locked area of New Mexico and have been researching areas to move to. Seattle, too cold, San Diego, too expensive and a minimum 3 year wait for a slip, Hawaii not enough marinas to support live aboard and the crime rate is huge. So that takes care of the West coast and Hawaii. So now I am looking at the Texas Gulf coast. Any thoughts out there on the Texas Gulf marinas?
I need access to population as I am a Medicare Insurance agent and still need to make a living.
I am considering a minimum of 38 feet to 42 feet of boat, I would like feed back on the type of boat and rigging that is best for the Gulf and Mexico sailing.
I am a master craftsman with tools that I plan to keep in a "Office warehouse" space on land. However I do not want a "Project" boat.
I am single and only answer to myself, so I am very flexible.
Thank you for your thoughts.
