Treasure Island area

We are chartering out of St Pete this new years and im looking for a place to bring the kids shopping and walk the beach. I was thinking about taking them to treasure island. Any suggestions or places to take them would be appreciated. We are going to stay in Tampa Bay for the fireworks and spend one night at Desoto Pt. This is going to be their first time sailing and i want it to be fun and not burn them out being stuck on a boat for 5 days. They are 12 and 15 years old.
