I have a Mac 5300 (running Mac OS 8.0) Powerbook with lots of ram and hard disk space. Could you recommend any electronic charts or navigation applications that are available for this operation system?

While I'm not all that familiar with the Mac computers, I believe that if you are using the latest versions of SoftWindows or Virtual PC, you can use any one of the currently available Windows-based charting and navigation programs. For example, the Capn program has received outstanding reports of running on later Mac's (after 1998), using the latest versions of SoftWindows or Virtual PC. My experience has been that the Windows-based navigation programs run slower than normal because of the additional layer of interface between them and the Mac.
There are several electronic charting systems and navigation programs made specifically for the Mac, such as NavimaQ and Maxsea. The NavimaQ was developed by cruisers and the tech support is spotty requiring you call them at their cell phone number. The original version is still in use and it's starting to look a little dated. The Maxsea Navigator is a European product that is kept updated, runs on both a Mac and a PC and uses all the popular raster charts.
If you already have SoftWindows or Virtual PC on your Mac, then you can use any Windows program that meets your needs and budget. If you don't, then financially you may be better off buying the NavimaQ or Maxsea.
