Servicing a Simpson-Lawrence Windlass

I have e-mailed Simpson-Lawrence in the United Kingdom with no reply.</P><P><STRONG>Tom Wood responds:</STRONG></P><P>You may have a model 510, which is oil filled and is identified by an oil filler plug on the port side, or a model 555, which is grease filled. The 510 is chain driven and the larger 555 is completely gear driven. Both are easy to service if you have the exploded parts diagram from Simpson-Lawrence USA (e-mail info@simpson-lawrence-usa.com). Be aware that the grease used in the 555 is special high-temperature grease used in wheel bearings of racing cars and aircraft. Also, changes in the parts of these models over the decades they have been in production sometimes require a factory rebuild if your unit is elderly.</P></HTML>
