Don Casey is on a distinguished road
UV Sock Cover

I would like to make a UV cover for a furled headsail that would be hoisted up the furled genny like a sock rather than being sewn to the genny. Do you have any information on this canvas project?

Don Casey responds:

A sock-type headsail cover is nothing more than a long, skinny rectangle of canvas with some means of fastening the two edges to each other. This can be a zipper if you don't mind the expense. Most people use twist-lock fasteners placed about every two feet. You can install a grommet at the top end for hoisting; or it might be easier to stitch a loop of heavy webbing. You will also need a grommet or loop at the bottom to tie it down when the cover has been hoisted.

Don't forget that you need a halyard to hoist this type of cover. The spinnaker halyard is usually pressed into service. You zip or button the cover as you hoist it, and unbutton it as you lower it.
