I have an SSB on board, but I have no idea how to use it. Can you suggest any learning resources that might also discuss the capabilities of the SSB in the cruising world?

Sue and Larry respond:
Dear Wynn,
Glad to hear you're interested in learning to use your SSB (single sideband) radio. We know you'll find it useful, informative, and entertaining. First check out our article on the SSB radio to give you a better idea of its importance. Then, to jump start your learning, you may want to purchase A Mariner's Guide to Single Side Band by Fred Graves.
In the meantime, you might try scanning through the 6, 8, and 12 Megahertz frequencies (for example, 6215.0, 8152.0, or 12359.0). Try these around 7and 8 p.m. and in the mornings around 7 and 8 a.m. These are normally the busiest times to pick up other sailors talking.
Enjoy your radio. If you ever hear Serengeti talking on the SSB, break in and say hello.
Regards,
Sue & Larry
