Wet-cell Marine Batteries

How long does it take to recharge a wet-cell marine battery, say by generator?

Mark Matthews responds:
There are a couple of articles on our site you should take a look at right away: Calculating Your Electrical Load
and Electrical Power Aboard. Both of these, written by Kevin Jeffrey, deal with sizing electrical capacity, battery bank layout, and predicting your load on board, all of which will play a part in how long it will take to recharge a wet-cell battery.

I mention these articles because there are a number of factors to consider when recharging a wet-cell battery, including the state of the battery to begin with, the output of the generator, temperature, rate of discharge, and how many other batteries are in the system. The above articles should help you better understand the issues involved in these areas, and should prove insightful in general.

For a more thorough treatment of electrical systems on board cruising boats, have a look at SailNet's Buying Guide on Electrical Panels, circuit breakers and disconnects. Good luck to you.
