Where would one go to buy convoluted foam that is sheathed for sound? I can't find it in marine store catalogues anywhere.
Sue & Larry respond:
You're right, convoluted foam for sound insulation doesn't seem to be carried by marine stores. When we installed a new engine on our boat, we used the convoluted foam you are asking about and we it through Grainger, a large industrial and commercial equipment supplier with branches throughout the US. If you can get your hands on one of their 3,500-page catalogues (that's not a misprint), you'll find all kinds of goodies in there. Alternatively, you can check out their website (www.grainger.com). The telephone number there is 800/323-0620.
Convoluted foam is usually is available in sheets 54 inches by 27 inches, packed four sheets per box. And usually you'll find it available in one, two and three-inch thickness. Prices for each box from Grainger are as follows: one-inch thick $83.15/box; two-inch thick $160.25/box; three-inch thick $228.75/box. Grainger also sells special adhesive to install the foam, which comes in 11-ounce cartridges that fit a normal caulking gun ($7.60/cartridge).
Good luck with your project.
