Rope mats

I finally got around to doing what I was always going to do someday - convert my old halyards into rope mats.

While on walkabout got to sail on many chartering tall ships on day sails by making thump mats and other woven rope stuff. Make the promise, get aboard, deliver the goods while sailing for free.Arrr, them were the days.

As an after thought. I find the best material for smaller step mats is cotton sash cord , the kind old fashioned weighted windows used. Cheap, easy to weave and easy to wash. I put em down with contact cement and wash and bleach when they come loose.Larger flemish and woven mats can use up a heap of old halyards. A large slab of plywood with casing nails driven at the appropriate loops makes it so easy to make the first few turns. If you have a real steering wheel on your vessel, a Turks head knot shows the tdc spoke and seys to all aboard "I yam what I yam"!!
