Double VS. Split Backstay

I need to replace the split backstay on my Catalina 22. I'm not planning to adjust tension regularly so I was considering two options:

1) Replacing the adjustable setup with a tang or shackle and doing two static wires on turnbuckles to the transom, or
2) Ditching the "split" concept all together and doing two separate backstays, meeting at the single clevis pin on the masthead (Catalina Direct: Masthead Casting - Flat Mast C-22).

Does anyone have thoughts or suggestions on which way would be best? I've read that some will upgrade to two separate backstays for "Offshore" purposes. While I probably won't be doing that type of sailing, the additional redundancy would offer some piece of mind on Lake Michigan.

Thanks.

Re: Double VS. Split Backstay

Don't give up the adjustable backstay. It's a very useful control, even for cruising, and when the wind speeds pick up it will allow you to keep weatherhelm down and the boat on it's feet. Even if you don't use it now it doesn't hurt you to have it there.

If you remove the adjustable backstay then I'd leave a split so that you could put the adjustable backstay back on.

I'm no longer participating on SailNet.

I agree, don't get rid of a tool just because you don't use it much. Learn to use it, and you will wonder why you ever considered getting rid of it. Having that tuning and control tool far out weighs the "peace of mind" that you might get from having redundant backstays!

Thanks for the comments guys. Sounds like you definitely have a consensus on the usefulness of the adjustable backstay.
