alternative hardware

I've been bemoaning the lack of deck hardware on my W27 since I dropped it in the water. Each day sail has me making lists of blocks turn-outs and other needful items. This last weekend, I felt the need for a vang and was whining about it when I espied a ratchet strap on the settee.

Aha! and "Voila!"

'instant' boom vang! :D
While definitely not boatish and certainly un-marine; it sure does work as a quick-fix. I'll get a heavier version for [more] permanent use. ;)

I use a motorcycle bungee net to hold items on the shelving unit and
(other) ratchet straps to secure the goods on the settee and keep the reefer and M/W in place.
Stacked surplus South African plastic ammo tubs to hold excess and heavy items, secured under the table by a cleat screwed to the ply sole hatch and fastened by... you guessed it... yet *another* ratchet strap! ;)

Next project is an old Navy canvas hammock...suspended a'tween the mast and push pit by a couple of.... wait for it.... ratchet straps!

What other items in common use can be applied regularly or in a pinch on a sailboat?

What???? Are you serious???

You can't use something 'just because it works'... ESPECIALLY if it costs a fraction of the proper "Marine" device! Shame on you! You are required to save your pennies, pay exhorbitant prices for that 'proper, approved' marine gear..;)

Sorry, couldn't resist!:)

Actually, good on you for improvising but really, in this case the adjustability won't be as slick and some of the parts may corrode rather quickly... though any vang is better than no vang at all, as long as it's adequately strong..

The Low Buck Projects thread has some ideas about using non-boat stuff on boats.

I recommend hanging your hammock from the forestay or a spinnaker pole rather than the bow pulpit. It's quite comfortable up there, we did this fairly often on the Catalina 25 and I've done it a couple of times on my Pearson.
