Overhead compass?

Anyone make an overhead compass anymore?

I''m looking for a compass I can install in the cabin to occasionally glance up and confirm the vane is still sending me in the right direction.

I''m looking for a real one, not a ''universal mount'' automobile type compass that can be mounted 360 deg but you still have to look horiz to read it. I''m looking for one that basically reads ''upside down''

I''ve searched the Internet high/wide with no luck. Maybe I''m using the wrong search criteria?

They are technically called a "Teletale" compass" and Danforth made one well into the early 1980''s. They are essentially a flat card compass and typically have flat plate glass lenses which prevent them from working at large heel angles inless the whole compass was gimballed which they typically were.

I guess I just have to find an antique one to go on my ''oughta be in a museum'' WS32 then...

Every once in awhile I get a nautical jewelry catalog in the mail full of things that I can''t afford. One of the things in the catalog has been a tell tale compass. The company is A.G.A. Correa & Son and the price is $520. You can find them on the net.

Thanks Fernando but Jeff_H''s tip about the Danforth inspired me to seek out the nooks & crannies of the Internet until I found a nice NOS Danforth overhead mount compass a chandler had forgot about in the warehouse.

It was his last one so I snagged it and it''s on the way.

I have the lighted version of this compass and it's everything that I need. I remove it from my boat when not in use, and mount it on the cabin top when I'm in my bunk. Extra mounts are a few bucks, and allow for placement at the nav station, your bunk or whereever else you might need it. The lighted version uses an LED and a single AA battery in the waterproof handle and the unit is supposed to float. (never tested that one) Check it out. I also found it for much less $$ on-line, Goggle is your friend.

The compass I want to sell is a Danforth..very rugged..not lighted. It belonged to Charlie Dennis, Past Commodore of The Storm Trysail Club. I am trying to sell it for his widow. I see that Correa has new ones fror sale at over $700
this one should bring at least $500.
