Refill Propane?

New to us boat has some equipment that's new to me, such as the propane stove. So I see we have a nice propane tank--probably not something we exchange. I assume we get this refilled somewhere, which would be...where?

usually at gas stations and convenience stores.

Why can't you just exchange?

Local gas station - one with a big sign saying "Propane Filled Here". A big propane tank above ground is also a giveaway.

If you have custom tanks like I do, convenience stores and other exchange-style places don't work too well. Luckily I have a gas station 5 minutes from home that refills propane.

My tanks are a very non-standard size, so refilling is the only option.

Ask around the marina, where do people go, someone will know.

Re: Refill Propane?

Here in OZ there is a manufacturing date stamped on the tank. If the tank is older than ten years no one is allowed to refill it until it has been pressure tested and restamped... or replaced. Replacing a SS propane gas tank isn't cheap!

Ace hardware is where we go. Many have refill stations . If you are near Deale which I think you are try Amerigas, Ferrelgas, ask in your marina. Make sure you have a modern tank with pressure release valve or they won't refill

Very few boats use standard size .

Re: Refill Propane?

U-Haul locations sometimes have filling stations. U-Haul: Propane Refill Stations

Or ... AmeriGas Propane: Propane Cylinder Refill Location Finder

I will bet a google search in your area bring some others up.

Thanks all. Chef2sail and Minnewaska, a search on Amerigas shows a Sunoco pretty near to Deale that does refills. Good to know, thanks! I'll ask some others at the marina just to see where they go, too.

Related question: the tank has a pressure gauge. Does this in any way tell me how full it is?

No unfortunately only when it has no pressure it is out:eek::eek:
You can buy a pressure gauge to put on.

We have two #20 in dedicated lockers under each side of the helm area. We have an attachment to one with a step down pressure valve to hook into our magma so we don't carry the 1 lbs bombs.

When our stove/ oven bottle goes empty we can switch tanks ( hopefully not right in the middle of cooking ). ne 20 lb tank lasts us almost 3/4 season of heavy use, although we don't use our oven much.
