repair on a Santana 20

Looking at buying this boat for summer fun. Schock Santana 20 1977.
Owner mentioned a crack from the stanchion but no mention of the hull/deck issue.

I can fix this but any thoughts like run away or a little duck tape and go sailing.

So shrink wrap pulled in on stanchion on starboard side and hull/deck joint is separating on port side.

looks like a simple repair. Buy and fiill the area with a Kevlar reinforced epoxy putty. "shape" the repair with a right angle grinder with a sanding disk on it - a touch of paint and you're good to go.

Cut away the damaged material so you can see what's happening around the failed area. If the deck cored has the coring failed? Sound the deck with a plastic hammer or a screwdriver handle to determine how much of the deck will need to be replaced. See epoxyworks.com for clear instructions on how to repair the deck.

That stanchion damage looks like the core has rotted away. In order to fix it right you will need to cut away the glass either under neath or from the deck side until you find solid coring. Then you should replace the coring with something suitable ie: same core material or marine ply of the same thickness, then re-glass. As to where the deck pulled away from the hull side you will need to grind and re-glass both the deck flange and the hull flange in order to make it structurally sound. I would grind the whole inside edge along the deck to hull flange to bare glass and lay glass tape in there to make a single structure, that way you won't or should have to worry about the joint tearing apart like that again. Neither of those 2 stops can be fixed with just putty, and be able to stand any stress ie: flexing of any kind for long.

I've done both of those types of repairs but I'd say unless this was a fantastic deal (ie almost free) and/or you really want a santana 20, I'd probably avoid it. That stanchion points to a rotted core. Neither of those is a ton of work and can certainly be done by just about anyone willing to take some time to do it right, but my guess would be there is more work than just those two parts needing to be done. Fiberglass is labor intensive but relatively cheap. I like to use epoxy since it bonds so much more strongly if you do decide to tackle it.

Yes I agree. I offered a much lower than asking price after seeing the damage. Owner described a crack in the deck but failed to mention the separation on the port side. Boat comes on a decent trailer, with good set of sails and a 4 hp outboard. All of which is worth more than I offered if taken separately, but as a whole package I think I was on the money.
