Loosing power Universal M25XP

When running the engine at more than say half speed my engine starts to loose power and RPM's. It seems to run fine at lesser speeds but as soon as I kick it up it starts to die out and even stall. Waiting a while will allow the engine to start again but soon I am stalling out again if I push it. I have had the fuel tank cleaned, the fuel polished and the air filter replaced. Yes all three were a mess. Any ideas??? Going to talk to my mechanic soon but would like to have some idea as to what can be causing this problem.

Pick up tube, it's always overlooked and has a fine mesh strainer on the end.

Re: Loosing power Universal M25XP

You didn't mention replacing the fuel filter. Just because the fuel has been polished doesn't mean your filter isn't clogged.

Re: Loosing power Universal M25XP

I am having the same problem, but it bogs down but does not actually stall. I think that I am getting air into the fuel system, but not sure from where.

Check the filter on the electric fuel pump.

Re: Loosing power Universal M25XP

There should be two filters - one on the fuel pump, and the pre-filter.

Re: Loosing power Universal M25XP

Could be a few things actually. In addition to the above posts, how does the temperature look? An overheating engine will stall. Also, do you have a vented fuel tank? If the vent is clogged it could be restricting the fuel flow. After experiencing the problem, start taking the fuel cap off slowly and see if there is a suction of air sound. If so, find out where the vent is and make sure it is clear. You can also diagnose this one by loosening the cap while running and see if the engine speeds return to normal. Too many things to be sure, so get to work. :-)

Re: Loosing power Universal M25XP

I had a similar problem with my X25. It turned out to be the electric lift pump which was working intermittently. Replaced it and everything was fine. You can get a replacement pump at NAPA.
