Spade anchor comes up backwards

My spade anchor comes up backward over the roller every time. It has swivels at both ends of about 6 feet of chain between the anchor and the rope. Getting it turned around requires use of the boat hook. Anyone have experience with this and a cure?

Mine always comes in backwards as well, but it corrects itself at the last minute if I just continue pulling in the chain.

My Spade anchor also comes up backwards but I have a multi-directional swivel from Bo''sun Supplies Co. and never had a problem, it just turns around at the anchor roller. Here''s the link:

Please, please, please research the anchor swivel you are using. Search under "swivel failure", "lost anchor", etc.

One company "Holland" went broke after lawsuits, another company "Suncor" has taken the swivel off the market due to failures and lawsuits.

Please check it out and go back to your high tensile shackles.

Spade anchor comes up backwards

Bruce I have the SPADE 100 anchor and my anchor **always** comes up the right way. Just as was previously mentioned, it looks like it will come up wrng but at the last minute as the shank comes up into my roller it flips over the right way. I think it does this because of the huge weight of the tip of the Spade anchor causes it to flip around downward (the right side up).

I have a maxwell Freedom windlass and maybe that is the reason it comes up the right way....if the chain feeds in the right way it will always have the shackle the same way.

I do NOT have a swivel. Maybe having the swivel defeats the chain and shackle coming up the right way???

Hi Bruce,

You problem is only the result of a physical law.. :0)

Usualy, when you are raising your anchor, your boat is going forward..
Then, due to its shape, your anchor turn itself in the direction of the minimal effort.. the "tip" looking forward..

After breaking your anchor free, try to go slowly backward.. and you will see that your anchor wil then be on the right position..
