Help with my roller furler

In my new to me boat I have a harken mk111 unit 2 roller furler. These are the instructions for raising the sail from the manual.

"■ Raising Sails
1) Install the prefeeder by securely tying the end of the line to a deck fitting
or to the toggle below the furler so it is 2 (610 mm) below the feeder.
2) Align the tack shackle so it is directly below the slot at the top of the torque
tube. Shackle the tack of the sail to the drum. Install shackle so screw pin
head is on the same side as suncover. See page 25 for torque tube
alignment.
3) Secure the genoa sheets to the clew.
4) Attach genoa halyard to the halyard swivel.
5) Pass luff tape through the prefeeder and feeder into the foil groove.
6) Attach the head of the sail or the pendant at the head of the sail to the
halyard swivel.
7) Hoist the sail."
If I were at the boat I could make more sense of this I'm sure. I was wondering if some one could elaborate for me. Expecially the first two lines. I'm just not sure what the prefeeder and feeder are.

Re: Help with my roller furler

The prefeeder is a device that grabs onto the luff tape of the sail and helps it get into the slot on the furler. It's not necessary but helpful if you are doing this solo. Without it you'll want a person at the furler feeding the sail in. This could be you, but you'd also need to temporarily route your jib halyard forward so that you can raise the sail from the foredeck.

The feeder is the entrance to the slot at the bottom of the furler.

If there are any sailors around your marina when you do this I bet they could help. I have helped many of my slip neighbors install sails on their furlers, it really is easier with two people.

I'm no longer participating on SailNet.

Re: Help with my roller furler

Well whats this line they are talking about tying off 2' below the feeder. Also what is the small wire about 6" long with a d ring(or whatever) on it?

Re: Help with my roller furler

the 2' below the feed is where you tie on the pre-feeder with the small line. it is tied to the furler shaft below the the section with the sail groove. the 6" pendent is so that the top swivel will be almost at the top of the foil when the sail is raised. it is used if the sail is shorter then the foil. if the swivel is not close the top of the foil with a shorter sail the halyard will not have enough angle to the swivel and could cause halyard wrap when furling.
