uni-fid vs traditional fids

Has anyone had sufficient experience with New England Ropes'' Uni-fid to render an opinion?

uni-fid vs traditional fids

We had several different fid types brought over by memebers of our crew. (we were changing out all of the wire lifelines for lifelines of Amsteel synthetic rope)

Everyone put away their fids once they saw how well Brion Toss''s splicing wand worked.

I'm thinking about replacing my wire lifelines with Amsteel (1/4"). Now that it has been a few years, what do you think of your decision?

Did you have any problems running the synthetic line through the stanchions or is there hardware you used to do this?

WRT Brion Toss's splicing wand, I've noticed that splicing directions use FID length for the measurements between marks. Does this pose any issues when you use the BT splicing wand instead of a FID?

Yes, many splicing directions use fid lengths as a unit of measurement, but many modern fids aren't the same length as traditional ones, so they need to have a measuring reference someplace, like on the packaging.

I think he uses multiples of the rope diameter instead of fid lengths. Regarding the NER Uni-fid, it seems to work better than the traditional fid (with pusher) but the hook is a weak point. I've broken two of the small ones after only half a dozen splices each. I just bought Brion Toss' wand but haven't tried it yet.
