Poop, that works if you cut the shackle off the old halyard first. Otherwise your halyard would be reversed like the OP.

The OP is needing to reverse the halyard, not replace it, so he will have to use a messenger line.

I believe PoopDeckPappy meant in normal situations, not specific to this case, however if the shackle is just bowline'd (or
) to the halyard you could of course untie it (of course then we'd not be having this thread now would we).

Sounds like any of these methods will work well. the halyard is brand new this season actually.

When I whip the bitter ends of my halyards I always leave a very small loop of whipping string to serve as an attachment point for a messenger line.
